Lesson 4 of 4 · Module 07

Communicate Security Findings Clearly

Security work includes helping someone else decide what to do. A useful finding connects an observation to its possible impact and a practical next step.

Separate observation from interpretation

An observation might be that a practice folder permits anyone with its link to view it. A possible consequence is unintended disclosure if private files are added. That is different from claiming that someone has already accessed or stolen information.

Write for the person making the decision

A technical teammate may need the setting and reproduction steps. A manager may need the affected process, uncertainty, and suggested owner. Both need a clear explanation without unnecessary jargon or exaggerated urgency.

Make a bounded recommendation

For the practice folder, suggest reviewing its intended audience and restricting access if public sharing is unnecessary. Name how to verify the change. Include assumptions so the recipient can correct them before acting.

  • Start with the main finding.
  • Use plain language for the impact.
  • Include an owner or next question when responsibility is unclear.
