Lesson 4 of 4 · Module 04

Make a Personal Security Response Plan

When a device is lost or an account is inaccessible, it is harder to make clear decisions. A short plan helps you find trusted recovery routes and prioritize what matters.

Identify dependencies

Email often supports recovery for other accounts. A phone may hold authentication apps or receive verification messages. List which important services depend on those devices and accounts so you can recognize a recovery problem before an incident occurs.

Prepare trusted recovery options

Keep official support routes, a trusted contact, and the location of recovery materials accessible without relying entirely on the device you might lose. Protect the recovery materials themselves. A plan can record where they are stored without placing passwords or codes into an ordinary shared document.

Rehearse without disrupting anything

Imagine your phone is unavailable. Could you reach your recovery information and contact the relevant provider from another trusted device? Walk through the steps without signing out every account or deleting anything. At work, follow the organization's response process instead of a personal plan.

  • Record whom to notify.
  • Keep an inventory of important accounts.
  • Review the plan after changing devices or recovery methods.
